During an excursing trips to document project “Organic Golden Silk” in Kampot province. The CYEA team works have drive on the red soil road in the whirling cloud of dusty crossing village to villages before reach a rural village nearby Dam Bok Khpos pagoda, in Angkor Chey district. Along the road sides in the dried season most of rice field are dried out which trees are less green leaf, but in a farm of mulberry garden there’re reach in greenery – because the farmer have to take care their mulberry leaf for feeding the worms silk.
Mr. San Vannary, Director of Lotus Silk who’s conduct the project “Organic Golden Silk”; and the few member families were await at the garden. She introduced about her member team works and the project. “Lotus Silk is supports social initiatives such as the Golden Silk Project for community development and income generation to our local people here in the Kampot Province. There few villages in the area starting to product the silk yarn, not just for making income the project can preserve the valued traditional of Cambodian silk.”
“Local people in the villages can earn income from our project, by growing mulberry for raising the silk worm, and then they can collect the yellowish cocoon and harvesting the golden silk yarn,” Vannary said. “Our project Golden Silk is a part to reveal backed all the talent and experiences of grand-generations in this area. They’re used be greatest expertise for making the high quality of yellowish silk accordingly to the naturalism product steams since the ancient times.”
Mr. Mom Vit, a farmer in Dambok Khpos village said “we’re here starting to reveal back our parents heritage traditional from the past, and with some additional technical from Golden Silk Project, as like training of preparing the land-field, product compost organic fertilizer, preparation related to climate change, growing mulberry and harvesting, then producing the silk yarn.”
“We spent 4 weeks to take care converting from the mulberry leaf to cocoon. From the first day of chick worm to the day of 25th or 28th the worm build their yellowish cocoon which we can go to draw our yarn,” Vit said. “This traditional silk production made many group of people are busy most of the time – but we’re happy to work and getting our extra income as well as to protect our parents heritage.”
Mrs. Vannary said, “this Kampot organic silk can produce a wonderful Silk Scarf, it is our most ethical product as we work closely with local community in every step of production silk. We ensure our Silk Scarf Products line to the 100% organic golden silk producing by our Cambodian community as well as using natural dye color too.”
After getting the raw material of organic golden silk from Kampot province, we bring those silk to the group of local families in Prey Veng province. This exciting stage is the most creative, innovation to make it worth as their natural organic value. “Lotus Silk has to designs and working closely with waving community in Prey Veng to transform them in to products which people can hold, wear, much comfortable with warm, love sense with uniquely and freedom.”
Today, Golden Silk the project involved with two communities in Kampot Province for growing mulberry, silk worm raising, produce the organic golden silk yarn and one community in Prey Veng for the hand woven silk. In the future Golden Silk project will involve with one more communities in Kandal and Takeo Province for Natural Color Dying Center.
“The main products of Lotus Silk are consist of scarves, hair accessories and vintage clutch bags, which we export to North America and Europe. People likely to use recycled fabric and hand woven fabric silk, the end of roll fabric to reduce the land fill and con- sumes less electricity to protect the our earth environment.” Vannary said.
“With this traditional arts of golden silk yarn and products, we offer job opportunities to disadvantage people, both women and men, there are tens families get benefit from our project,” she said. Beside many villagers of farmer can get their extra income with the Golden Silk project, currently Lotus Silk, have provide income and work opportunity to 13 people with basic
salary US$ 120 to US$ 350 per month. 90% of them are women and 10% disable people, we encourage the other marginalize people to apply for the job for everyone which giving more option and choices for them. We plan to have 20 staff by 2017 to work on our social
enterprise, we also provide the vocational training and compensation during the training period.
The products of Lotus Silk are targeting clients is local also, and international such as tourists, ex-pats and local between 25 to 45 year old, who are care about environmental love freedom and self-confident. Lotus Silk provide our collection within the ethical aspect both products and custom tailoring services to make people style unique. “Our plan is to introduce these products to EU countries and Japan market,” Vannary said.
These eco products line’s Lotus Silk used the recycle fabric through our contemporary design playing with joyful color combination and paten to make it become our vintage identity product.
